Guns aren't there to protect you from government, or you need nuclear missiles. Guns are there to protect you from regular goons who have to actually turn a profit when they mug you.

Also if you don't fear regular goons as much, you are much less dependent on government and much less likely to accept restrictions on everybody's freedom on the name of protecting you from goons. In a way guns are just as important as the freedom of the press.

After all, a free press won't prevent the government from misbehaving but it will make it much less likely because they can report it. Having goons run amok is never innocent. It makes people afraid. One of the things that made gulags hard to bear is that the criminal inmates

have free rein on political inmates, making life much harder for the latter than actual guards, which didn't bother so much. All totalitarian regimes use this trick. Of course in democracies this is not a conspiracy, but politicians and their families enjoy gun-enforced safety.

There is no safety for preys, ever. There are three ways not to be a prey: 1) you train 2) you carry a gun (where legal) 3) you get private protection 1 is time-expensive and hard and not for everyone; and even if you have a black belt you can get severely wounded in a fight.

2 is much better where available. Paradoxically, showing the gun more often that not defuses the situation. 3 is the best option, especially if your guards have serious training (ex elite military) and have guns; but it is goddamn expensive (1 ex-commando is several thou/mo).

What about 4) You only get assaulted by bad guys so slow that you have time to call the police and wait for them to get to you and arrest the bad guys ? (Still doesn't work in a countries where the police won't show up, anyway, which is about all of them if you're not connected.)
