For my birthday, I watched it again, with Rebecca—wisely *after* we were sated with a nice dinner—and she comments that this movie was ridiculous in the best possible way. I agree. The movie radiates with love of its subject, under its light façade. Totally appropriate last shot.

No special visual effect, only beautiful use of the camera and great use of Mahler and Liszt plus a few sound effects. Unlike today's "magical realism", Itami doesn't bring magic into every day life — he makes every day life itself magic. Mission accomplished.
