Are we okay with The Bargain? The Bargain is that women and BIPOC workers are asked over and over again to take on the unpaid civic labor of de-biasing institutions. And at the same time, we are often harmed while doing that labor, because many do not want it done.

I am grateful to the sisterhood of public radio. I want to thank for rallying the troops when I needed guest hosts; and for chopping it up about entrepreneurship + life. You both are doing amazing things. Grateful for you.

Crystal ball for 2024 cycle: distinct possibility that the Democratic party will win the presidency, based among other things on the discontentment of women post-Dobbs with the GOP; and that the victory will be narrow and that extremists will mount attacks after the elex.

I have one of those adult dilemmas that happens when you're an independent woman. So, in a previous job, people entrusted me with information designed to correct ethical violations at a journalism organization. Some of them took great risks to do so.

I've begun sharing my experiences more widely with people who hold institutional power. I hope one or more has great suggestions for me. And if you too are dealing with institutional headwinds that claim you are less worthy, while you do unpaid labor -- you deserve better.

Our Body Politic is working on our first documentary... we'll share more soon. Despite the prescience of Black and BIPOC journalists about challenges to democracy we remain underfunded in building institutions. We are still building. I'm working to make sure we're rewarded, too.

Take this with all the grains of salt. But I thought Trump was a viable candidate when many of my colleagues didn't; and predicted January 6th. I'm keeping track of a wide variety of factors. And by attacks, I mean disaggregated/local attacks not another breach of the Capitol.

I can say things many people at big companies cannot. I have never signed an NDA despite working in journalism for 35 years, and I know where many bodies are buried. But digging for evidence of past misdeeds and building for the future are different.

Media was my life before I had my own life. I was conceived in Zambia, where my Mom was a freelance reporter. She stood up to a judge who tried to kick her out of a courtroom while she was covering a spying trial. She and my Dad met in j-school at Syracuse....

Unfortunately, I was not positioned for success in the inquiry. I do think I made some difference, by collecting and surfacing the information, but I had hoped there would be more institutional support in due diligence from the organization I was at at the time.
I just finished another pre-interview for the doc and it's totally giving me life. That's why I want a level playing field. The one argument that rarely lands is that diversity (in journalism, and business) is just better for the field.

I have a lot of documentation, but I also don't want to go on the warpath.... that's exhausting. I have lots of journalism I'd rather do than revisit this. Yet, I don't want to pretend this didn't happen or doesn't matter.

And I suffered reputational damage from the (then-)head of the organization in question, who impugned my reputation in order to hide misdeeds.

As an independent businesswoman, for whom reputational damage is more than trivial, I recently revisited the matter with many of those involved. It's been a huge stressor in my life.

Ten years ago, in a month-long writing retreat, I wrote a science fiction novel. I was/am a "pantser" so I wrote with no outline and many things were structurally wrong. Enter: Chat GPT....

People who lack certain forms of institutional power are prescient about the future because it's a matter of survival. I'm working with a group of others to bring more BIPOC women/nonbinary folks into public applied futurism. Despite the challenges, life is exciting!

I don't expect people to champion diversity because I do better. I expect people to realize that they do worse when it doesn't exist. If journalism were equitable, we wouldn't have made so many of the mistakes that undermined democracy, full stop.

Sometimes it's been hard to stay positive with the persistent underfunding/-resourcing of women of color who are media entrepreneurs. But we are also creating new roadmaps, and it feels beautiful to be a trailblazer.

I tried for years to change "the newsroom." I failed. And in the end, I created my own newsroom. We employ people with infants and young children. Guess what: they do great work! All the hazing of mothers/parents in newsrooms is not necessary or healthy.

Someone also said, "Chat GPT won't replace the writers. But it may replace the show runners." So, take it all with a grain of salt. But as someone who's really dragging my heels on re-outlining the plot of this book, it was helpful.

One of my first bosses told a job applicant who didn't get the promotion I did that he "had to" hire the Black woman. I was told my natural hair made me look "young and unprofessional."

I hate the sound of my own voice in recordings. I don't work in media to be seen or heard for my own pleasure. But I do do it in order to be seen and heard -- and mainly to listen and observe -- as we navigate life. And that's been challenging.

We employ a racially diverse staff. We have no problems doing this. I can say with much inside knowledge that all the bemoaning of the lack of diverse talent is total b.s.

Journalists of color and female/gender expansive folks have led conversations for years about how we have undermined our own future, from climate/environment to reproductive justice. All you need to do to NOT understand society is narrow the field. Which is what institutions did.
