Now that’s fine, if you remembered to save your Win10 *license* number.
My PROD. KEY stemmed from a free univ. Win 8.1 key I installed on my Mac Bootcamp. Well, I no longer run boot camp and my Win10 Toshiba is only Win10 Home (
RDP).

*oh, I have the OG. 8.1 prod. Key and the Win10 PROD. KEY I manually backed up prior to wiping Bootcamp. Perfect!* •enters Win10 Pro key in Toshiba• •invalid• “oh duh I have to do a HW xfer” •calls support• “well we can’t allow you to register that for a couple reasons”

“.... 1) you saved the Win10 Prod key not Digital License” “Windows created that product key during my free upgrade from my official Win8.1 Pro key” (which i also provides him as I wrote that down too) “Well yeah now we use the digital license. Windows made a temp. Prod. Key..”

“... to initially register your copy of win10 pro, then created the new digital license from that temporary product key. You saved the temporary key not license” “Yeah I didn’t know of the change at the time. Just make me a new license from the key. You know it’s an official key

“Welll the problem is the free upgrade period is over, so we can’t create new digital licenses.” “So you’re saying there’s no way to get a win10Pro license bc I have a temp key and there’s no way to generate a license so I have to pay $100 to upgrade my FREE LIFETIME UPGRADE?!?”

@microsoft “Yep sorry” So yeah long story short, if you upgraded during the process, make sure you backup the digital license. i used Bootcamp for a month when it was req. for class & wiped the partition since I only have 256Gb SSD Partly my fault for not noticing the (hardly)1 reply 0 retweets 0 likesShow this thread -
Discussed change in licensing at the time. Here’s the KICKER I could recover the original Win10 Pro license if I re-installed it via Bootcamp on my Mac. BUT
@Apple replaced my motherboard ~1yr later after it failed so my Mac doesn’t even register to be original license

So yeah this should probably be a blog post, but thank you
@microsoft. I haven’t even touched on how it ties in to topic issue’s #2) UEFI/Secure Boot, #3)Windows insider program, and #4) Ubuntu “Support”. Bringing full circle, if you need Terminal/SSH. Just run Live distro on USB1 reply 0 retweets 0 likesShow this thread -
+1) Forgot how this ties to killing small business repair. Users bring in OLD machines for repair. Free upgrade? Yes?= HW change means support call to xfer license. W/o written copy of upgraded digital license means loss of Win10 “FREE LIFETIME UPGRADE”

(+2) basically either the store uses a new OEM license so they’re already paying out the ass. Or if they don’t have one (some dont) & have to pay outright.
