I usually love Colby King’s writings, but this piece is a touch hyperbolic. Did Bowser try and cajole the D.C. Council into leaving her budget priorities alone? Yes. Did she succeed? In some cases yes, other cases no. (Cont.)https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trumps-governing-style-seems-to-have-brushed-off-on-dcs-mayor/2019/05/17/b53fb1dc-7814-11e9-b3f5-5673edf2d127_story.html …

And the critical question: Is that any different than any past D.C. mayor? Nope. In ‘14, Mayor Vince Gray vetoed the budget because of changes the Council made. The Council then overrode that veto. That’s significantly more dramatic than what’s happened so far this budget season.

Every mayor thinks they know best, and they fight to keep their budgets intact. Every Council takes up its role as a co-equal branch of government and makes changes, which mayors tend to oppose. There’s some fighting, but eventually a budget is passed.

I think we tend to oversell the idea that any D.C. mayor can (a) consistently sway the Council to their side and (b) that if they don’t get some of what they want they’ve suffered a big loss. In most cases, the mayor gets 90% of what they want out of the budget they propose.

King is right about one thing: Bowser bet big on being able to unseat @tweetelissa and lost, and that one exposed her as somewhat politically weak. That being said, almost no mayor has long coattails, and most seem to know that and avoid getting into electoral fights.

What defines this mayor is her tactics. In the end, her argument opposing me & paid family leave was not policy driven, it was “she isn’t for us” and “it isn’t for us.” It is a strategic embrace of “othering” that makes her Trumplike and antithetical to Democratic party values

What defines this Mayor is her relentless fight to give more residents a #fairshot U put an expiration date on adult job training programs which over the years have set thousands of residents on #pathwaystothemiddleclass 2/3 of PFL benefits go to MD VA & beyond = not strategic

Got to go with JF on this one. A plan which sends .66 of every dollar outside of DC is idiotic.

Might be worth noting that D.C.’s higher minimum wage also goes to workers in the city to live in the suburbs. I mean, that’s how labor laws work: it’s where you work, not where you live.

I was open to other PFL strategies. I never saw one presented by the mayor’s office. There’s no fair shot without PFL.

Please stop the attack between the Bower Administration and the Council. I know you all care about this city. The attacks have been ridiculous and the city agencies should have stayed out of it. I am 29. I am autistic. You are all older and should know better.
