When it comes to likely Brexit deal, we've gone from 'exact same benefits', to 'frictionless trade', to some friction, to now a choice btw Canada style deal OR what govt is calling Australia deal which is not a deal, but WTO arrangement with tariffs and the Irish protocol

  8. this is now going to be the subject of mutual negotiating power. So Government in turn now focusing on saying that No Trade Deal would be fine and we are almost back to where we were in October, albeit with legal Brexit having occurred and the billions paid.

  9. This is the crux of what the UK claims is the EU rowing back on Autumn agreement. Others saw this quite differently, that the EU kicked the can on tougher level playing field arrangements (than Jp or Can) into the second phase, always with intention of reintroducing them...

  10. The key question - will the level playing field commitments actually be enforceable - they aren’t for EU-Japan and EU-Canada - UK wants same treatment, EU want a form of binding arbitration “including appropriate remedies” (also new language)

  11. EU today also reinserted word “adequate” into description of arbitration mechanism on level playing field. In leaked UK document, change in language to “appropriate” was hailed as a negotiation win, as it meant should be able to resist binding arbitration

  12. In a thread from Autumn I pointed out how the UK & EU had deleted detailed Level Playing Field from the legally binding withdrawal agreement and put them in the non binding declaration ... EU negotiation document brings all of this and more on climate change back again...

After reading the full official Government review into I'm posting a long thread on exactly what is in it. This isn't a complete version but will be (when finished) a pretty comprehensive list of anything of significance. So here goes...

  17. PM says "we will not accept any diminution in food standards... but he says "to the America-bashers, in doing free trade deals we will be driven by science and not mumbo-jumbo" ... That is exactly how US has couched its approach to pathogen reduction treatments for eg chicken

Given the speech we are expecting from PM today... this from Starmer is v interesting. If he’s backing freedom of movement, presumably if he wins he’d go into 2024 General Election arguing for EEA/EFTA membership:
