Election Day is next Tuesday, Nov. 3rd. Make a plan to vote. As a registered voter, you're entitled to vote a regular ballot. If for some reason the poll workers aren't seeing you on the voter rolls, DON'T panic, and DON'T walk away.

If they can’t find you on the rolls, double check that the poll workers don’t have a backup list-- sometimes they do that because they run out of time preparing the mail list. Ask “do you have a backup or supplemental list?” You can also ask them to call the election office.

If they still can’t find you on the rolls, you're still entitled to vote with a “provisional” ballot under federal law -- don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Some places call it a “failsafe” ballot or a “special” ballot.

*Note if you asked for a mail ballot, in a lot of states, you're not entitled to vote a regular ballot, but the provisional ballot you'll be directed to use will be counted if the requested ballot isn’t received.

In some places you can sign an affirmation & vote with the regular ballot and then the mail-in one wouldn’t be counted if they get it.

Provisional ballots are secure. Fill out the ballot envelope completely. Election officials in your county or city will process that ballot after the election. Once they check the registration list, if they find that you registered to vote in time, your ballot will be counted.

The poll workers should also provide you with a means to learn whether your ballot counted.

You should never leave without voting AT LEAST a provisional ballot... unless you simply forgot to bring valid ID (if required in your state) and can retrieve it and return to the polling place in time to cast a *regular* ballot.

Otherwise, in some states you will have to "cure" that provisional ballot by showing up with your ID after the election. Check the information you were given or call your local election office to check what you need to do. Save the hassle, get your voter ID from home and go back.

You can call the Election Protection hotline at 1-866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683), a non-partisan hotline where help is available from a live person who can assist you.
