Great to hear criminal justice reform mentioned — positively! — in the for the second time in a row. But it’s wrong to say that anyone “got“ reform “done.” With implementation still underway, the First Step Act isn’t even “done.”

I am deeply proud to announce the launch of Info World Arizona is a news and information site looking at Arizona through the lens of criminal justice. The site is created and run by formerly incarcerated people that have been through the system.

"Mandatory minimums are unfocused: by locking everyone up indiscriminately, they put some of the wrong people in prison too long and waste public safety dollars that could be better spent on nearly anything else."

“For people returning from incarceration, access to an affordable home is also key to ensuring successful reentry into their communities and reducing their risk of recidivism.” This is common sense, and arguably the most critical aspect of the re-entry process.

Think about this: — Iowa is 90.7% white — Iowa is now the only state with a lifetime voting ban for people with a felony conviction — Black people make up 4% of Iowa's population but 26% of its prison population How is this representative of our electorate?

Levels of self-harm in prisons are up 16% to 61,461 in the 12 months to September 2019. Prison reform campaigners have criticised the government for failing to respond to serious mental health problems and called the latest figures a “national scandal”.
