Meanwhile the cloud providers use free software contributing little if anything back. This is the real threat to open source, not traditional software companies trying to fight back.

I don’t think that matters. They open source code and have decided to maintain it. That’s admirable. Others like AWS not so much.

Meh. The evidence that Google supporys NIH projects is slim. Amazon isn't relevant here. I would say Microsoft would be a major supporter if they were to open source Office and/or Windows.
