That the vaccines were going to reduce transmission is something that every expert I've spoken to has been basically sure of, but very few would say because the studies weren't in. But that meant months of playing down the benefits of vaccines.

But now: “Vaccinated people do not carry the virus — they don’t get sick,” Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Tuesday. That’s “not just in the clinical trials, but it’s also in real-world data.”

Similarly, the FDA just approved cheap, rapid, at-home, over-the-counter tests based on technology that's been around for quite awhile now. CDC is launching a huge pilot experiment with them. Did we really not know enough to move forward sooner?

How much data should regulators and politicians need before they act? When we're in an emergency like this, should that standard drop? Is it better to move faster, even if that might lead to errors? These are big questions, and they still matter:https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/01/opinion/covid-vaccine.html …

I don't think that spreading this information actually helps. I know that it pushes the "virtue signaling" of wearing a mask when you don't need one, but as soon as you say that vaccine == no mask, people will lie about their vax status or just rely on the status of others.

Its exhausting that responsibile people who have suffered and followed guidance throughout the pandemic have to constantly do the unnecessary to accommodate stupid / stubborn people that wont follow the simplest safety precautions and prob wouldn’t change their behavior anyway.

The fact that the experts were willing to talk about vaccination leading to herd immunity meant that they implicitly accepted that vaccines reduced transmission. But they wouldn't concede that until the studies were in in. Foolish messaging.

I just see it as being smart. Wanting to make sure that their hypothesis was supported. Being cautious and timid was the way to go.

Why do vaccinated people need to wear masks? I really hate to agree with Rand Paul...but it does start to feel like theater

Because it is the more safe approach to take till you are sure. No one has moved at this speed before and it better to be safe than sorry. We forget that this is still in the EUA phase.
