A lot of debates that sell themselves as being about free speech are actually about power. And there's *a lot* of power in being able to claim, and hold, the mantle of free speech defender.

Three conditions for a Biden-Trump debate: *Trump releases his taxes *Real time fact checking *Debaters only speak when it's their turn, no talking over, enforced by muting the Mike if necessary Based on Tom Friedman's outstanding article https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/07/opinion/biden-trump-debate.html …

Yes, but, part of why people like myself are so concerned about free speech is that historically censorship (whether by government or others) has targeted those with less power. Strong free speech norms help those without power.

its so insidious, there's no institutional attacks on free speech (well not in the way Free Speech Defenders THINK there is) so theyre pretending like CULTURE needs to be ""pro free speech"" by allowing anyone to say anything no matter how heinous else society literally dies

For the people attacking free speech, it's mostly about power, yes. For the people advocating free speech there are some that are motivated by power. For many it's because we are convinced by the arguments that it's an important part of a well functioning society.
