It's very interesting to imagine multiparty democracy of the kind @leedrutman describes in this age of fractal online identity organization.

Isn’t the social science on exposure to information online pretty suggestive that the most likely product is a hardening of our existing identities? Motivated reasoning makes us justify our identities with new information, not change them, etc?

The specific factions he’s talking about seem like an incredibly small subset of actual political identities among the youngs. If anything Internet seems to have homogenized a lot of youth culture. Those legendary hipster cafes look and sound the same in every city now.

You folks invariably reverse cause and effect. Factionalism on the Internet is an accurate reflection of existing polarization in culture growing out of decades of values dispute, an argument that long predates the Web.

But does polarization explain how one side has lost its moral compass or abandoned the rule of law? Polarization explains why think what they think. The bigger problem is how they act like they act.

Social media has diluted ‘shared physical location’ as a primary group identifying factor. Our politcal system is based on location based representation. Meaning our political system is not able to resist polarising forces that derive from social media based group identifiers.

National politics tends to collapse into two poles because of the structure of our voting system, which currently only works well when there are two candidates in a race. Better voting methods such as STAR voting have the power to change the paradigm.
