The “fighter” lane is really crowded in the Democratic primary right now. The “hope” lane is wide open. That’s part of why Buttigieg has caught fire so fast.https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/4/16/18310769/pete-buttigieg-barack-obama-2020-presidential-announcement-hope-primary-democrats …

Democratic elites have become disillusioned with "hope" messaging. Part of that is Obama hangover, and part of it is trying to learn Trump's lessons. But hope is really important in the liberal psychology, as the last two Democratic presidents will tell you.

Also, there's a *huge* gender dynamic to who has to prove themselves a fighter — you saw this with Hillary Clinton, too — that I discuss in the piece.

How about we focus on the policy lane?
-
That’s also Warren.
-
She is much better than most.
-
Buttigieg-Warren would be unbeatable.
-
Reverse that. She has 10x the experience.
-
Tell us again how well "experience" served us in 2016. I want to *win*. Not have a pissing contest.
-
For Pete's sake, we've got 20 Dems running, we haven't even had a debate yet. No need to crown the prince right away.
-
Many of us prefer to vote for experience. Don't discount our votes.

Just shows that women and POC have to fight for what white guys can take for granted.
-
Exactly. This isn’t a compliment or selling point, it’s a revelation of privilege/protected status.
-
Selling “hope” without acknowledging that we’re in a fight for our lives isn’t smart or realistic. Hope won’t keep refugee children out of cages, or black children from being shot by police, or school children safe in the classroom. Hope didn’t defeat fascism. I want a FIGHTER.
-
Yeah, right now hope is pretty much in the same category as thoughts and prayers.
-
Synonymous.

Maybe bc after 3 women’s marches, the time’s up movement, and very real threats to our reproductive rights, women need to fight. I find the women’s speeches to be hopeful and inspiring, and using any other aggressively-connotated words reflects our legitimate frustration.

I need a fighter in order to have hope
-
Absolutely. We need a fighter to survive. A TESTED fighter to thrive. You'd better believe, "hope" isn't what's motivating those who agree that Nazis are "fine people."
