This was a great read! Recommended for anyone working to connect their results to the kind of narrative that makes people care (ie: me, I am bad at this).

Anyone doing sensory neuro have a way of coping with one word two meanings here? (sensory v. viral transduction?). I try to avoid this when I write, but neither really has an alternate.

It's the end of the year, so it feels like time to reread Hamming's You and Your Research

I also LOVE the suggestion that selectivity at the level of pop'n correlations is inherited from V2. I think that's provocative, and it has driven me to clarify my thinking on why that doesn't have to be true.

Paper of the day: "Laminar Differences in Responses to Naturalistic Texture in Macaque V1 and V2" by Ziemba, Perez, Pai et al. in . I like how they break down selectivity across spiking, MUA, and LFP.

If methods in your field are improving quickly (like in neuroscience), coding is an essential tool for staying on top of the data available to you.

I like how this article takes the long view, but I’d add: IF your field has good tools, AND you believe the data will take the same form for your entire career. Coding for yourself means that you can independently ask new questions with new kinds of data.

This work inspired my interest in how neurons organise themselves in the brain, not just what they do wherever they are. I've so enjoyed this collaboration with !

Question for those who speak English as a second language: I usually make sure most of the details are in writing on my slides when presenting in ESL-dominant venues, just in case something I say is unclear. Is this helpful, or annoying?

Canada Day in Dusseldorf. Should I work on my slides or find a rye & ginger* before the sun goes down? (I’m thinking the answer is both) *assuming a Caesar is out of the question.

It starts to rain as I head out the door “hey, maybe I should wear my wellies!” I joke. 10 minutes later, the heavens have opened and I watch as my flip flops are caught in a fast moving current and swirl down the street. I walked home barefoot.
