New day,new records in #Cuba. Another very hot day with temperatures up to 34C/93F. Hottest January day on records were set at Velasco with 33.8C and al El Jibaro with 32.5C. 7 stations so far in Cuba had their warmest January day on records (some beat it twice).

Tropical Storm Cheneso is battering the Reunion Island. On the climatological day of 25 January (03-03UTC) few absolute records for daily accumulations were set: 469.7mm Gros Piton Ste-Rose 441.2mm The Colossus Record approached at St Denis Gillot: 344.7mm (365mm 04/01/1987).

Heat is increasing in Sub-Saharan Africa. Today 26 January Matam in Senegal rose to 41.0C. Many stations in the region are very close to their records of hottest January day. Similar temperatures are expected in the next days.

Record warmth once again in #China after a harsh cold spell (which nevertheless produced few records of lowest temperatures). 24 stations (21 in Yunnan,3 in Sichuan) today had their warmest January day on records including 24.1C at Kunming (1892m) and 31.6 at Yuanmou (1120m).

Endless record heat in #Cuba. Yesterday 25 January the capital Havana-La Habana Casablanca Observatory rose to 33.0C/91F, its hottest January day on records. Record heat again at Punta del Este (Isla de la Juventud) with 32.3C. More records are on the way. Map courtesy of Insmet.

Heat is increasing in Central America. Yesterday in Honduras temperature reached 38.0C at Choluteca (1C from national monthly record), 33.8C at Nueva Ocotepeque (626m) 0.2C from the monthly record and 27.0C at La Esperanza (1700m).

Parts of Scandinavia witnessed very high temperatures in the past 2 days for local fohn winds. Stunning 17.0C on Tuesday evening 11pm at Marstein in Norway. Yesterday in Finland,Vaasa Airport rose to 8.2C which is a new January heat record for the station. (Kudos ).

December 2022 in #Malaysia had an average temperature of 27.1C which is 0.2C below the 1991-2020 normal. Rainfalls were very abundant in the Northern parts of the Peninsula bordering Thailand and near average in the rest of the country (see Rainfall anomalies map) .

One more record of highest temperature for January tied today in Florida: Titusville 88F. At the end of the month Florida will warm up again and might reach 90F and tie or beat the January State record of highest temperature. Stay tuned.

26 January in Japan and more all time records fell: -13.3C Kuroiso -16.4C Otawara (previous 11.9C ! POR since 1976) -13.5C Shioya -14.4C Numata -14.4C Ueda -8.2C Yokkaichi -12.3C Higashiomi -16.8C Nagi -14.2C Imaoka Additionally,many records of lowest max. fell yesterday.

Update on Japan cold spell Two all time lows were beaten on 24 January: -8.3C Tobishima and -11.6C at Matsumae + 2 more with short POR On 25 January Ushibuka tied its all time low with -3.4C (POR 1949-) The famous Mt. Fuji (3772m) with -36.1C,had its lowest temperature since 1997

*Asian Cold Spell:Koreas* 25 January was a very cold day also in the Koreas up to -33.2C at Chunggang in North Korea and -25.2C at Taegwallyong in South Korea. -17.3C in the capital Seoul,-12.0C at Pusan in the South. Freezing allover but no records were beaten.

Asian Cold Spell-Taiwan. A cold morning in most of the island with up to -9.1C at high elevations and +2.5C at Matsu at low elevations. At Anbu,on the hills above the capital Taipei at 600m asl drizzle fell with less than +1C during the night. Map with 6am temperature by CWB

A cold front reached Cuba but before that,more exceptionally high temperatures were recorded. Monthly records set at Pinar del Rio 31.9C and Aguada de Pasajeros 33.6C. The capital Havana (downtown station Casagrande) with 32.6C missed by 0.1C its warmest January day on records.

Freezing night in Northern Africa highlands but also locally at low elevations. In Algeria -7.3C at Batna (826m),+1.0C at Annaba on the coast. In Tunisia -5.6C at Kasserine (707m),and near the coast -0.2C at Tabarka,+0.6C at Bizerte,+0.1C Gabes AP and exceptional -3.1C at Enfidha

Similarly to Montenegro, 2022 in Serbia was also the 2nd warmest year on records (see data below). In Slovenia,Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina 2022 was instead the warmest year.

While NE Asia is shivering,SE Asia is sweltering. These days have been very hot in the Gulf of Thailand with temperatures above 36C. The town of Trat (station Khlong Yai) with 36.1C tied its warmest January day on records while Koh Sichang with 35.5C missed it by 0.1C.

The cold air reached Japan with strong gale and snowstorms. In the Korean Peninsula daytime temperatures are very low, Seoul has -14.2C at local 1pm. In Japan some records might fall, but mostly in stations opened after 1970,with few possible "surprises". Stay tuned.

East Asia Cold Spell: The cold air entered the Korean Peninsula with 100% of the stations dropping below freezing. No records were set today but tomorrow the cold will expand further South and East reaching Southern China,Taiwan and Japan.

Record hot day also in Western Cuba. Santa Lucia (Pinar del Rio Province) pulverized its January record of highest temperature with 33.2C. Pinar del Rio fell 0.1C short with 31.4C. In the Isla de la Juventud (Youth Island) new record at Punta del Este with 31.4C. Map by Insmet.

Today was a cold night in parts of Western Europe from England to Spain where freezing temperatures were recorded even at low elevations in the South Striking difference between London Heathrow AP with Min.-8.4C (lowest temperature since Dec 2010) and Dublin AP (Night Tmin +9.3C)

South America: Some showers today are interrupting the last brutal heat wave in Northwestern Argentina,but next week the intense heat will move East,between NE Argentina,Uruguay,Eastern Paraguay and Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). Only the next weekend will see a relief there.

East Asia Cold Spell: Next days we can expect the cold to take over Southern China, the Korean Peninsula and Japan. To the other side,it will be unusually mild in Tibet and records warmth for January might occur in NE India (including Kolkata),Nepal,Bhutan and Bangladesh.

Records come and go in this wild 2023 full of extreme weather so far. Today 22 January the station of Tepak in Cyprus,with the support of fohn winds from the Trodos Mts.,rose to 25.5C which is a new record for January in Cyprus. Mild weather will continue for 4/5 days.

It's historic: Jingtao AWS in China dropped to -53.0C. This is the lowest temperature ever recorded in China in a NMC station. It belongs to the second-tier stations (automatic).

20.6C/69F looks very mild to be a record of lowest temperature but this temperature which was set today 21 January in the Palauan Int. Airport Babelthuap ties the record low which was recorded 3 times before:in 1953,1979 and 1998. Note:Palau officially uses Fahrenheit (69F=20.6C)
