Socrates ruthlessly interrogated Athenian democracy so hard that his students led an anti-democratic coup and became tyrants. Then the tyrants lost power and everyone hated him. This is what got him killed.

I agree with the sentiment. But we should clarify that for Plato truth, justice and the principal virtues are unified and understanding them goes beyond simple belief. Also Socrates' religiosity lied outside that of Athenian political orthodoxy
