I never understood the need for the brutality, isn’t honesty enough.
I have a business partner who tells me I only say this when I think an idea of his will fall flat. He says "brutally honest" really means "My opinion is going to piss you off but it is too important for me to care, so I tip you off in advance."
I am brutally honest about myself and I think people don't do this b/c it also sucks and doesn't make people like you very much
The trouble is that if one admits a fault, the ethos is that they have created a moral debt. We mainly resolve such debts by inflicting suffering on the debtor. No rational person invites suffering. Therefore one is never brutally honest about oneself (in public).
people who brag about being brutally honest tend to enjoy the brutality more than the honesty
My experience with people who are brutally honest is that they can dish it out but they can't take it.
We do things we do, including think as we do, because we feel that way. And therein the paradox of reason: to find out where it comes from, one needs to examine emotion, and then adjudicate it, in the name of higher wisdom. Yet emotion is best explored by emotion itself!
