Slight improvements in the real world are also worthwhile to pursue. Ideally the system would get immediately better, but if targeted consumption makes things somewhat better that shouldn't be dismissed. If it comes at the expense of more work for radical change it is bad!
Ethical consumerism is thinking that you can buy your way out of a system whose problem is that it has turned every form of human activity into a way to sell things.

No it is thinking that benefiting certain modes of selling over others is worthwhile, as opposed to assuming all commercial activity is morally equivalent.

It's also quite reasonable to consider the possibility that some manifestations of the production and selling of goods are more conducive than others to maintaining societies where non-consumerist values can coexist alongside buying and selling.
