The responses to Facebook abusing people's data are bizarre. A company that exists only for profit owns everyone's data, and uses it…for profit. And the solution is for a "better" profit driven company to own all our data? How would that ever work?

It would take such a tiny amount of public funding to build out a system that could rival Facebook that we wouldn't even notice it. You wouldn't have to trust a billionaire to not spy on you, or the government not to. You would control it yourself. That's the solution. Obviously.

Eh. As someone with IT experience, I'm a bit skeptical of distributed networks. It sounds like a nightmare to manage.

All the base level protocols we now take for granted (TCP/IP, http, email, etc.) were developed using an open, consensus driven process. The change to a "free market" philosophy happened later. No reason FB couldn't be rebuilt using the original method. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2009/04/07/opinion/07crocker.html …?

Comms tech is naturally monopoly forming. There are other solutions, but people go whereever other people they know are. It's who is on the other end that people want, not the particular app.

That is exactly why phone companies had to be forced to cooperate and interlink their ability to make calls. There can be no social media competition without forcing them to interoperate. No tech solution on it's own will work.
