I followed a bunch of philosophy grad students at one point, and slowly unfollowed all the men because they were constantly trying to prove how smart they were in the most obnoxious possible way. I now see why women drop out of philosophy majors so much.

Anyway, long story short

Wouldn´t it be better to encourage those women to defend their ideas too, instead of attacking philosophy students who like to talk about philosophy?
-
But they already do defend their ideas, just in a way that isn't an obvious attempt to puff themselves up and show off how smart they are.

It’s not good to paint a picture of *all* men that way because it’s false. It’s that kind of thinking, assuming all men or women are ONE way, that we should stay clear of. I hear you, though, men are MUCH likelier to act as you’ve described (my own anecdote).
-
Totally. Need to find a way of talking that validates this incredibly legitimate experience and social/cultural phenomenon without disenfranchising all men. I have experienced this trend in philosophy but it's so subtle and non explicit it's hard to talk about.

Imagine philosophy students actually engaging in philosophy instead of posting pictures of their cats. How very dare they.

No offense, but didn’t you just describe yourself tweeting politics?

I wonder if that's not a more general pattern that also holds for other disciplines...
