they're the real reactionary vanguard, the outer layer of defense for the RW agenda... even the ones who don't realize that.
The funny thing about self proclaimed "centrists" is they seem to spend 100% of their time and energy attacking the left.

It depends on where you live. I think of myself as a centrist, but since I'm in a very conservative state, I spend all my time arguing with conservatives.

I think some of it comes from a disappointment in the processes of a group of people who's goals they align with.
