Paul Ryan reading Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" seems to have had a similar effect.
A great novel can change who you are. For example, after I read "War and Peace", I became way more pretentious.

I too became more pretentious -- I quit at the 90% mark because I didn't really care what was going to happen to any of those people.
