Could someone who believes in compatibilism explain it to me? It feels like a semantic sleight of hand to me.

If you are a soul and it makes decisions: you are free. If you are a body and it makes decisions: you are likewise free.
That the body itself has properties (as it must) doesn't change the fact that what you ARE takes actions, in a deliberative way.
