The reason the American government can't build a temporary hospital in 10 days like China can is because our government is intentionally inept. They are actively kept from any organization to improve people's lives, so as not to "compete with the private sphere" and harm profits.

We have the money. We have the industry. We have the expertise. But ideal capitalism wants government to be prevented from doing anything useful for society. And the private sector will never find profit in "being prepared to build pop-up hospitals", so it can't do it either.

"war on terror" illegally overthrowing regimes such as Iraq killing and displacing millions and all the while giving the finger to sovereignty and international law wouldn't it be more sensible to more money into enterprises such as this rather than taking care of our citizens

I wish I could like this twice. The IRS has tried to make taxes basically automatic but TurboTax and HRBlock lobbyists have fought tooth and claw to stop this, this is how our government works. Neoliberalism is just bougie organized sabatoge.

A public hospital wouldn't look good on the profit line. I mean, we can't have the filthy poors getting health care when there is a perfectly incapable CEO in need of another perk tacked onto his $20 million salary. Won't someone think of the rich?

This must be right. I can't think of any other reason why the "richest country in the world" couldn't build a MUCH NEEDED HOSPITAL.

Isn't it odd how the same people who badmouth "Big meddling European-style socialist Gov't" - run to Gov't for help if business is horrible for 2 weeks & looks like it might stay that way for awhile? They hate "Gov't HANDOUTS" & entitlements ...till THEY want 'em.

Hospitals should be nationalized so that we can maintain a surplus of care. So many are on a tight budget to maximize profits or are simply in the red. They can't handle a pandemic
