If they want to study whether or not we need to move past capitalism to solve the climate crisis, because an economic model based on competition that requires endless growth for investors can never reduce consumption...well, they will double not get funded.
If, for example, we had taken that money as taxes and spent it on the same purpose, we could democratically decide how to allocate it, rather than having a billionaire with extremely vested interests decide what science is or isn't valuable.
We don't democratically decide how to allocate research dollars. Not at all.
The government has its motives for how research dollars get allocated too.
