If they want to study whether or not we need to move past capitalism to solve the climate crisis, because an economic model based on competition that requires endless growth for investors can never reduce consumption...well, they will double not get funded.

If, for example, we had taken that money as taxes and spent it on the same purpose, we could democratically decide how to allocate it, rather than having a billionaire with extremely vested interests decide what science is or isn't valuable.

To me the much bigger issue is that we know what needs to be done, but it takes the power of the state to make changes -- compulsory mpg standards/efficiency standards/adoption of solar/mass transit funding. If he funded an Amtrak upgrade, for instance...
