When people like Bernie Sanders say that Republicans are already doing "socialism for the rich" by giving out tax cuts and bailouts, it dangerously dilutes the goal socialism. We want workers to control their own lives, not for the government to give us money.
I get the rhetorical usefulness of lines like this in an election, but equating tax cuts to "socialism" is the height of absurdity. If anything, the rich don't have "socialism" because they get government money, they have socialism because they own the means of production.
I don't think "Capitalists owning the meaning of production is Socialism" is a coherent thought.
I remember hearing someone commenting "everyone is in favour of redistribution, what varies is the direction" and I think of you replace socialism with distribution what Bernie's saying makes more sense

Mm. I agree that redistribution via tax seems like it could just embed unjust systems and heirarchy. But I also see all redistribution of value/power/good as socialism by any degree, I think it's a valid definition: workers rights, unions - are socialism. As was resisting Stalin.
Owning the means of production... seems increasingly like archaic wording. At least it demphasises/erases both violent control and the fundamental creative agency and resource of people & planet that is continuously appropriated, suppressed, or messed with.

Sure. But the minute you start talking about "the means of production" most people's eyes glaze over and you end up in a frustrating 'intellectual' argument that changes nothing.
