Of course. But the really nasty part of the meritocracy fallacy is that success is a result of "effort". That people are poor because they for some reason CHOSE to be lazy (while in the real world, the poor of course tend to be the most hardworking).

I grew up in a very wealthy town and people there 100% believe that what they have is entirely a result of them working harder than anyone else, it's unbelievable

I have always wanted to know why it is considered “moral” to use your cleverness to get others to give you their money or goods, but it is immoral to use superior physical strength to take it from them.

It’s funny that word was actually invented as a derogatory term for a dystopian society where people are judged by their IQ. My priority atm though is calling bs on them calling themselves “liberals”: they are not liberating sh*t, just reinforcing oppression.

I've argued similarly against intellectual snobbery back when academic Twitter was on their "call me doctor" kick. They were all like "getting a PhD was hard work; I earned the title" and I kept asking what title the hardworking janitor who cleans their offices earned.

Often people value morality of rewards based on traits that seem authentic to that person. Inherited wealth might not be as authentic. Whether that arg is true or not is where the interesting discussion is
