I always took it to mean that there are only the silliest and tiniest reasons to limit class mobility but those who have the power uphold those things fanatically.

It's H C Andersen, the Danish writer of many fairytales for children. It is more about femininity I think, sensitive, girlish. Some critics have stressed repressed sexuality concerning Andersen. He also wrote the Mermaid's tale.

Plus it's super fake.

All the fairy tales are pretty committed to the rightful, essential heir philosophy. I prefer righteous essential hair philosophy but there it is.

You may be surprised to know that that's literally the idea passed on in the late middle ages, to a point that a peasant turned rich and started to behave like a noble eventually caused his premature death because "he should have stuck eating like a peasant"
