I'd be okay with free housing instead of UBI, depending on how it was implemented.

Universal housing, medical care, and access to food and water should be the standard. We literally have the capacity to employ drones and self-driving vehicles for farming and delivery and it’s only getting better. No one should be barred access to essential inelastic goods.

Well even assuming a labour force is required to maintain and operate all this doesn't mean incentive to work magically disappears just because you don't have to worry about housing, basic foods and healthcare. People will still want to start companies and work jobs.

It's weird because the best way to give people money is abolish rent. Why don't they want to do that

Universal housing is harder to apply equitably. Does every single adult get their own one bedroom? What about the neighborhood? Or the floor they live on? Or the amenities?

This is why I doubt it'll ever happen in the near future. Are people entitled to a lawn? Is wifi a right or a privilege and must it be fiber optic? I think enough people have different needs that whatever standard they agreed to would be seen as too much or too little for most.
