I thought my dad would really enjoy the episode of Boondocks where they make fun of the Obama campaign, since my dad has an inexplicable loathing for the guy. He was too busy being hateful and racist to actually notice the obvious jabs at the very object of his ire.

Looking at the three most recent American electoral epochs (the first New Deal, the Great Society, and Reaganism) it seems that major shifts in political legitimacy can override the age-based formation of political opinions, even among older citizens.

What causes these shifts in legitimacy, and the nature of the shifts, is too complicated for Twitter. I just wanted to observe that the last few unusually tumultuous years causing many to shift their worldviews after having them settled decades is not unusual.
