An underrated part of "the ugly duckling" story is that in addition to being beautiful, swans are also huge and mean, so that swan probably kicked the shit out of all the ducks that made fun of him.

To borrow from SMBC, the moral of "it's OK, because he turned out to be beautiful in the end" is not very uplifting. I can get behind the moral of "he kicked the shit out of them as revenge", as it's actually a step up from the original.
