He's both wrong and right here. On the one hand, Superhero movies and media are overwhelmingly white, although this is changing. On the other, the Marvel movies are far from soulless. And power fantasies have always been part of human mythmaking.

I get that Disney is this massive machine, but think Marvel has done surprisingly well keeping its movies from being mere sound and thunder. There's self-sacrifice, compassion, second chances, courage, standing up for the weak, questioning authority, the value of found family

Escapism is not "complicity". That's a wild, wild stretch. I've seen countless people inspired to do good public works and support causes while also being massive comic book/superhero film fans. And many of them are uncomfortable with the comic-heavy marketplace as well.

Alan Moore claims to criticize superhero movies but didn't he make "The Watchmans" a movie about how cool and awesome superheros are?

There's nothing wrong with (and no shortage of) criticism about all forms of media & entertainment. The world can be a nasty place. Not everything has to be deep & meaningful. Enjoyable escapism that binds people across the world & inspires many is not a problem.
