The conflation of democracy with capitalism is the greatest achievement in the history of propaganda. Not only are capitalist firms run like dictatorships, but they demand elected representatives not interfere in their autocratic rule. There cannot be democracy and capitalism.

I think the conflation of capitalism and "free markets" is also a strong contender. Everything we know about capitalism suggests that the natural end-state is basically just feudalism again.

Also, freedom-lovers have been tricked into trusting CEOs more than people they can actually vote for.

It doesn’t help that the CEOs have more power over change than said elected officials, people have a weird tendency to trust people who can bring about change, regardless of whether the change will actually come to be or whether the change is good...
