lmao a bunch of conservatives suddenly found this old tweet of mine and they are losing their minds. What is it about conservatives that they can't handle even very basic, uncontroversial historical facts being stated out loud, like "the Soviet Union industrialized very rapidly".https://twitter.com/existentialcoms/status/1146462266323111937 …

I learned from reading those comments that pro-capitalists don't view it as inherently good to modernize one's economy or achieve scientific/technological innovation. Could have fooled me, based on every single statement I've heard from a defender of capitalism prior to today

What people are denying is your use of stalinist USSR as a model for good communism. Because, you know, most people who have heard of Stalin don't do that. Would be like praising capitalism by gushing on how good the economy of colonial powers was at then end of the 19th century.
-
Mostly agree but if you search you can easily find capitalists who are nostalgic of the colonial era. They literally claim that colonialism( and slavery) was good because we brought culture to those people.

The Soviet Union benefited from being the world’s leading producer of oil in a time when oil became critical to the global economy and then used oil money to pay for their military infrastructure. Leave out oil/defense and their economy wouldn’t have grown rapidly.
-
Yes, a communist economy awash in oil money can use that money to build technically impressive things. But it does so despite their system. Your tweet is like saying that Gulf countries prove monarchy can still work.

But meanwhile they're simultaneously pro-Soviet alumni running everything and taking over U.S. elections at will? Bizarro.

“Communism won’t work unless it’s totalitarian” is a more on-topic critique, though? I.e. whether or not you agree with it it’s at least on-topic.

What do you mean, "also"? If "working" of some state costs hundreds of thousands human lives, I won't call it "working"...
