The funny thing about Kafka is if the same books were written in the USSR they'd teach them as a devastating critique of Communism, but since they were about the dehumanizing forces of industrial capitalism, everyone's just like "it's about how life is absurd, no politics here!"

to be fair, the fact that we chose the only form of economic model that as a rule will kill all of us eventually, is hilariously absurd

"The Trial clearly shows the importance of adequate signage in office buildings. Our protagonist is lost and has no idea what to do. That Kafka, such a jokester!"

What do you make of the metamorphosis at the end, the daughter burgeoning with new life as if she were emerging from a chrysalis? I was always focused on Joseph and never really clocked how the family becomes more happy and motivated after he’s gone.

Fair weather family. His sensitivity and angst were a burden to their middle class conventionalism and basic survival instincts, so it was a relief when he finally disappeared.

...it's literally both. Industrial capitalism is intrinsically absurd and perverse, yes, and that's part of the subtext of much of Kafka's work, but if you take a step back, it's also about the absurdity and perversity of religion, social relationships, one's own mind, etc.
-
It's also about the absurdity of being a Jew in Central European gentile society in that period, as is that of Bruno Schulz. It's not purely economic, or purely about structural prejudice, or the inanity of belief and the failure of human communication. It's about all of those.

each day I probably forget more and more about high school but I still can remember the emphasis on how Gregor Samsa had became useless "as a bug" to his family in the literature class I was on. I do worry about the those other high schools though O.o

Really a missed opportunity for a Marvel franchise, too.

I feel like most critiques of reality are also a critique of the political climate it was written in
