This is why we differentiate between geeks and nerds. Nerds are smart, geeks are obsessive. And you can be a geek about any narrow field of interest. There's train geeks, music geeks, role playing geeks. Lots of different kinds of geeks.

Sounds like propaganda from a nerd in denial. I once was like you. Nerd is just a more negatively charged word for a geek.
