In 1969 America put the first person on the moon. And then we were all like, "well, that was cool, what should we do now?". And for whatever reason everyone was like "let's imprison a huge portion of our population for smoking pot and shit."

Putting first person on the moon was all about winning the Cold War, and we know from Nixon tapes that War on Drugs was all about suppressing forces of dissent inside US.... So oddly enough, those two things have a lot in common.
