The pleasure derived is proportional to the hunger endured. There are no "positive states" within an organisms existence. Life is merely satiating insatiable wants needs & desires. Your very capacity to enjoy something implies your general lack i.e better possible states exist
Schopenhauer is hilarious because he's like "life isn't worth living, and I've proven it with metaphysics!" It's like....nah dude, you are just a bitter asshole. Other people enjoy their lives.
