Universal Basic Income advocates want to give everyone $1k a month. - your boss will use this as an excuse to cut your salary. - your landlord will use this as an excuse to raise your rent. - your congressmen will use this as an excuse to slash benefits and lower minimum wage.

Has that happened in places where UBI has been implemented?
-
I believe somewhere in Canada (Manitoba maybe) did a large scale trial for one year and none of these things happened. Tax credits are exactly the same thing

Isn't UBI really just the eventual answer to the inevitable situation of 90% of jobs being automated
-
There are two potential answers. One is something like UBI, or a societal commitment to respect and provide for the ability of people to live meaningful lives. The other is a 'final solution', where we decide not to. I'm hoping for one, but expecting the later.

Of course housing should be addressed. It is in fact a part of Yang's policies. UBI + affordable housing. Remember, $1,000 will increase mobility and dynamism. Small cities will become big winners. It's going to stimulate so many local economies that are dying right now.

Rent is already $1200 per month for a 1 br here in in Maine. I should know as a landlord. People here cannot afford to buy because of out of state boomers buying up normal homes to use as summer houses.

See also New Jersey—and it’s been that way for at least 20 years.

Your boss and landlord will get their own UBI check, and split yours too.
