Hollywood has tried to commodify every subculture we've had: goth culture, jock culture, gay culture, black culture, hippie culture, etc. But it turned out, in a surprise to everyone, that what made the most money was stupid nerd shit like comics and space ships.

Spaceships & comic books are not a subculture. They’re a location & a medium respectively, which means you can superimpose any subculture you want on them. This is like saying ‘concerts’ are easier to commodify than musical genres. They aren’t mutually exclusive. PS: nerds rule.
