Rent is basically just a tax that poor people pay to rich people in order to live in society.

lmao at the people who think rent is voluntary and taxes are not. My dudes, if you want to build your own shelter and live off the land in the woods, you don't have to pay regular taxes either. If you want to live in civilization, you have to pay taxes, and you have to pay rent.

If you don't pay your taxes, the police show up and force you to, through violence. Whereas if you don't pay your rent...the police show up and force you to...through violence.

Rent is a method of 'rationing' a scarce resource, namely land. Without which it will be crowded. And its an outcome of property rights of an individual. What you argue for is absence of property rights which will make everyone totally subservient to the state.

There is enough livable land on earth for every person to have over 87000 sq. Feet. There are far more empty houses than homeless people. Scarcity exists but not in the intellectually stunted and dishonest way liberal economists extol it.

Congrats you’ve found that it’s illegal to not pay taxes and illegal to stay in a home owned by someone else without paying. Police will use violence to keep you from shoplifting too. I wish rent was administered publically and I could pay the government for a home.

Might like this Bertrand Russell quote. Important to remember he is talking about *land* rent, not houses.pic.twitter.com/BavfZa4fgR

So, the rich and the police have the power to fuck with the vast majority of the population. Abolishing them would be a great start.

This libertarianism is getting out of hand.

Well said. Robert Hale, a Columbia law prof, argued the same point in a series of articles starting w/ the 1923 Coercion and Distribution in a Supposedly Non-Coercive State. If you want to see limits of state-backed coercion, look at the distribution & extent of property rights.

In the US at least you literally have to pay tax as a citizen, even if you arent a part of us society

So granted I eventually started and there were consequences but I didn’t pay for about a decade. When asked to pay I offered to go to jail. They said it wouldn’t be cost effective so I said I would never pay. It’s been “fine”.
