I once knew someone who, as a child, raised a baby cow by hand - fed it milk out of the bottle, played with it, etc. Then their parents told them they sold it to another farm, but actually killed it and fed it to the kid, then told them later on and scarred them for life lol.

My dad grew up eating the cows they'd raise. Grandad always said "If you raise livestock you'll have deadstock." Dad maintained that having to put down hurt animals was always far worse than killing them for food when they were healthy. Different perspective, huh?

My ex and her labmates at Illinois raised four calves by hand for several months as part of an experiment. At the end, one of them bought a huge chest freezer, had the largest steer slaughtered, and had the meat shipped to him. He ate that calf for like a year.
