The funniest part about internet dialogue is that people think if you put a link to something that agrees with your position, you have absolutely proven your side with a "source", and are therefore beyond question until a greater number of links are posted to refute you.

The same thing has been standard practice in academic publishing for decades, especially in philosophy. Why is it only bad when the internet does it?

Try chasing down those impressive looking citations on the average academic paper and, more often than not it boils down to "Here is someone who agrees with me"
