california is much more recent. give california another 200 years and there will be much more distinct dialects. Though the majority of them with be underwater

There's a ton of working class ppl and immigrants of color in Cali, dog. Our parents, friends, and children got a gang of ways of speaking and passing knowledge to one another in different accents and languages. Hope you're not forgetting about Us, camarada

It is attributed to the industrialization of the shires. During that process, each one was able to subsist in their area and industry and it became less necessary to travel. In turn, each shire developed distinct speech patterns that have largely stuck.

I don't think there was much travelling between shires before industrialisation.
