A lot of people think "nothing matters" because nothing they are doing matters. Like, yeah…not much would change if you stopped smoking weed and playing video games for a day, but that doesn't mean there is no difference between suffering and happiness, or freedom and slavery.
I've always loved this story & actually find it really existentialist (trite and sappy as it may come across).
