My philosophy fan theory is that Marcus Aurelius paid someone to ghost write "Mediations" to make him look good. He was so stoic, humble, virtuous, etc; and he was the ONLY emperor to give in to temptation and appoint his son his successor rather than choosing on merit? Come on.

that was actually standard for emperors. the few before Marcus had not been able to do it. had Marcus not done it he would have faced a civil war. but yeah, the Meditations was probably ghostwritten... ;-)

"Ghost write"... Most scholars don't believe The Meditations was intended for publication. Several pieces of evidence internal to the text that suggest it was addressed "to himself" alone. Marcus had extensive training in Greek rhetoric and was reputedly a talented writer.

...so he was capable of writing something much more polished than this, although his ability shines through in a few passages. These are rough private notes. One of many examples: he mentions a letter his tutor wrote to his mother, presumably meaningless to anyone else.

Hereditary rule was such a strongly established concept throughout the empire that if he'd appointed someone else Caesar, Commodus would have inevitably become a rival, and the Senate feared that because of the constant threat of civil war.
