Is it so much "free" or not considering that Scotland pretty much took over England? The Stuarts were the Kings of Scotland first and all the Windsors claim descent from them.

They moved to the English throne, and pretty much assimilated to English culture. If Scotland really took over they would've ruled from Scotland.
