Utilitarianism is whack, but it's still better than the previous "God (as I hear him in my head) said so"
The reason for morality being defined as "the greatest happiness for the greatest number" took thousands of years to formulate is because you have to write huge volumes of philosophy first in order to get anyone into a confused enough state of mind to actually believe it.

I guess I never thought of utilitarianism as 'moral.' I see it as an unfortunately sometimes necessary ethical perspective. It's easy to prefer deontology, but that raises its own questions.

Of course, that makes all other moral systems "I want less people to be less happy" Any Deontology or virtue ethics that isnt actively horrifying is just a heuristic for a utilitarian backend that humans aren't capable of acting on.
