They probably understand exactly why it's popular, what's taking up all their brainpower is working out how to sabotage the push for it to appease their donors while not losing a lot of popularity.
Centrist Democrats are struggling to figure out why newcomers who support medicare for all are so popular. I think I might have figured it out though. People like to not die of being poor.
